What They Say:

Come home for Christmas to the Best Little Christmas Shop – the snowiest, cosiest place you can be!

Home for the holidays…

Icing gingerbread men, arranging handmade toys and making up countless Christmas wreaths in her family’s cosy little Christmas shop isn’t usually globe-trotter Lexi’s idea of fun. But it’s all that’s keeping her mind off romance. And, with a broken engagement under her belt, she’s planning to stay well clear of that for the foreseeable future…until gorgeous single dad Cal Martin walks through the door!

Christmas takes on a whole new meaning as Lexi begins to see it through Cal’s adorable five-year-old son’s eyes. But, finding herself getting dangerously close to the mistletoe with Cal, Lexi knows she needs to back off. She’s sworn off love, and little George needs a stability she can’t provide. One day she’ll decide whether to settle down again – just not yet.

But the best little Christmas shop in this sleepy, snow-covered village has another surprise in store…

Guest Post - The Far Travelled Gingerbread Man

In The Best Little Christmas Shop, Lexi helps her best friend, Giselle ice some of the gingerbread men (and ladies) that they will later sell in the shop (assuming there are any left by the time the evening is over…). It was a fun scene to write as I imagined all the fun designs my character creating as she sits chatting in the cosy kitchen.
But it did get me thinking…I love a gingerbread man (has to be soft though – no teeth breakers, thanks!) but just where did these tasty people come from?
Apparently we have the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians who first created these tasty treats and would use them in fancy ceremonies. When the crusaders in the 11th Century returned from the Middle East, they brought some of the delicious, exotic spices with them. But it seems we have Queen Elizabeth 1 to thank for the appearance of the gingerbread man, having had them created for some visiting dignitaries. And then, as now, what the celebs had the rest of the population wanted. Gingerbread soon became popular at local country fairs and would be sold in little bags, their tops tied with ribbon. Exchanging these little packages of sweet treats was often seen as a sign of love.
Wouldn’t it make it all a lot more easy today if all you had to do to show someone you liked them was give them a bag of yummy gingerbread?
So, next time you’re biting off a leg off that tasty treat, spare a moment to think just how far he’s come – and then scoff the lot and enjoy!

About Maxine Morrey

Maxine has wanted to be a writer for as long as she can remember and wrote her first (very short) book for school when she was ten. Coming in first, she won a handful of book tokens - perfect for a bookworm!

As years went by, she continued to write, but 'normal' work often got in the way. She has written articles on a variety of subjects, aswell as a book on Brighton for a Local History publisher. However, novels are what she loves writing the most. After self publishing her first novel when a contract fell through, thanks to the recession, she continued to look for opportunities.

In August 2015, she won Harper Collins/Carina UK's 'Write Christmas' competition with her romantic comedy, 'Winter's Fairytale'.

Maxine lives on the south coast of England, and when not wrangling with words loves to read sew and listen to podcasts. As she also likes cake she can also be found either walking or doing something vaguely physical at the gym.

Why I'm Shaving My Head for Lancashire Women

Hi there! I know it's been ages since I've done a personal blog post.      Things have been... weird. I know the whole world has struggled getting used to this new normal and the new measures we have to follow. So many people have lost so much to COVID and my heart breaks for them. And while the virus itself hasn't changed my life very much, this time of lockdowns and self-isolating has been really hard for me too.      When it all first started to change, Steve was taken into hospital with a bunch of different symptoms. COVID wasn't really a thing then, so he wasn't tested for it, but looking back, we're pretty sure that's what it was. While he was in hospital in March, an inspector from the RSPCA came to check on the welfare of our dogs as they'd had a report that Sky, our GSD, was too skinny. She is petite, a slim girl who didn't have a good start in life but is spoilt rotten now, along with our other 2, Bella and Minnie. They had no concerns and
